Background
The World Radio Conference 2015 has approved digitalization of VHF communication by allocating some of the existing frequencies for a new data communications system known as the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), this is an extension to current AIS services. There is on-going work towards WRC 2019 to allocate channels for two way VHF data communications via satellite.
ESA has been actively supporting the allocation of VDES spectrum for satellite reception and transmission as well as the utilisation of the VDES for applications such as navigation augmentation systems.
Objectives
This workshop aims to provide an overview of the current status of the VDES development, regulatory aspects, potential maritime applications (e-Navigation) as well as planned or on-going pilot activities.
The workshop will be collocated with the IALA (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouses) e-Navigation working group meeting hosted at ESTEC from 15 to 19 of January.
