Space for Civil Protection Workshop 5-6 May 2011

The Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), together with the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), and in cooperation with the Austrian Aeronautics and Space Agency (ALR) and the Integrated Applications Promotion (IAP) programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) like to announce a workshop on “Space for Civil Protection”. The workshop will take place 5-6 May 2011 in Vienna, Austria.

The workshop will focus on a gap analysis of current civil protection strategies and solutions and the added value introduced by integrated satellite-based services. It is planned to offer a platform for the Civil Protection (CP) Community to present key examples of lessons learnt and reflect on the strategies and solutions of European operators and CP agencies. As a result, the workshop aims at identifying a way forward and the setting up of a roadmap for introducing integrated satellite-based services through end-user driven feasibility studies and demonstration activities of direct benefit to the European CP community.

The creation of a mechanism to federate CP users’ demand and articulate their requirements is considered highly relevant. The CP agencies have clearly articulated their desire and their willingness to improve their efficiency through better co-ordination at European level. This is foreseen to not only lead to improved interoperability and operational effectiveness but also to increased demand for satellite services and appropriate equipage as a consequence.
