Field-level seasonal weather predictions can empower growers to make better-informed decisions, reducing their food waste and greenhouse emissions. We have demonstrated a working pilot of a new seasonal forecast system that combines EC Copernicus model outputs with daily weather analytics to improve long-term rainfall predictability. Applications include summer planning for irrigation, cultivar selection and decisions about crop mixes to mitigate crops losses from drought, floods or climate-linked pathogens. UKSRI has identified British growers, producers and agronomists who could benefit from these services.

Meandair helps to quickly determine the safest and most fuel-efficient routes for general aviation flights with respect to the ever-changing weather.

Through the SkyLiberty project, ESNAH has created a service associated to a set of different products to support pilots and other aviation stakeholders in the performance of safe and effective flights.Originally designed for aviation, the SkyLiberty service has proven to be useful in several other domains (e.g. boats or trucks tracking).The service is composed of several modules named SkyUser (mobile application and web for pilots), SkyOperator (web application for operators, i.e. persons or entities owning and renting one or more aircrafts to pilots) and SkyLink (tracking device and satellite modem), which have different functionalities tailored to the needs of various stakeholders.

Vialone leverages Big Earth Observation Data to support European organic rice farming and trade. Copernicus data and tailored in-situ sensors keep rice paddy fields constantly monitored from both space and ground. Vialone unlocks best practices of organic paddy management and supplies early information on growth trends. Thanks to Vialone, the so-called mature consumer will be able to make healthy and informed choices based on reliable traceability information on top-tier organic rice.

However, we live in an imperfect world, in which man-made activities and natural disasters create conditions that limit our access to water and expose us to dangerous water events. Organisations around the world have recognised this challenge and shown their commitment to creating, as the World Bank terms it, “a water-secure world for all.”IMGeospatial is honoured to be part of this movement and has partnered with three clients to address the biggest water-related threats to our livelihood: flooding, water scarcity and water quality. We provide business intelligence that enables them to proactively manage their water systems, build resilience in their communities and ultimately minimise risk and impact. Alba Orbital is working to develop satellite applications which utilize each aircraft’s unique ‘Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast’ (ADS-B) signature. ADS-B signals contain data on flight path, and flight weather conditions, and can be used to enhance global weather forecasts, verify aircraft carbon emissions, and aid in Mayday scenarios, especially when fused with other satellite and ground based data-sets.

The PLIMM services developed within the project provide users with unique information on the performance of their assets. Using a set of proprietary workflows and algorithms on processed InSAR data the system is able to identify critical insights within the millions of individual measurement points. Developed in close collaboration with the user community, the system provides earth observation outputs in a format that is most appropriate for the target sectors.

Sensonomic’s system uses predictive and prescriptive simulations to assess system effects of credit deployment and open the market. European Space-based Information Management System for CBRN (EuroSIM CBRN)

CERASAT

CERASAT aims to provide reliable, real-time and global rainfall measurement services. It extracts the rainfall information from the signalling data generated in satellite communication (SatCom) networks by employing advanced machine learning and signal processing techniques. CERASAT can complement existing rainfall measurement solutions e.g. rain gauges and weather radars.

OWASIS-NL

The lack of proper information on water availability is one of the most challenging obstacles for water management practices. To fight this challenge, OWASIS-NL uses space assets in two innovative water availability services that support effective water resource management in the Netherlands and South Africa.

HiVaCroM

HiVaCroM uses a time series of Sentinel-1 SAR observations as the basis for generating field-level canopy cover measurements for high value potato crops on a national scale. The canopy cover measurements are required frequently, throughout the growing season, as input to yield models and to inform crop performance metrics. The yield model and crop performance metrics provided important information that growers and supply chain can use to manage crop-related risk during the growing season.

CSP-FoSyS DP

Concentrating solar thermal power plants with an electricity production of up to 250 MW have to be integrated into the electricity grid. Both day-ahead and intra-day forecasting of the production and therefore direct solar irradiance forecasting is needed.The demonstration project investigates a production forecasting system using numerical weather prediction and satellite-based nowcasting. The project includes the setup of a demonstration solar production forecast system for the La Africana power plant in Spain.

Impactor deliver a prototype/credit scoring tool based on locally collected data, weather data and remote sensing data works. With this, we can provide financing to smallholders  – and support traders in taking over financing activities to these smallholders – Impactor could in a later stage expand to advice, which after then can be presented to impact investors (via a platform).

For safe operations, commercial aircraft have to be able to communicate with air traffic control centres at all times. In remote areas such as the polar regions, communication is by HF shortwave radio, which may be severely disrupted by space weather events. The provision of state-of-the-art services for HF communication management is covered by the HARP project.

The Dynamic Public Transport System (DynTrans) is a concept for dynamic public transport systems based on existing transport networks and satellite positioning. DynTrans assists public transport providers and governmental institutions to increase the attractiveness of their public transport systems. The system provides a taxi-like transportation service for the costs of a bus ticket to passengers.

Smart Coop Solutions (SCS) is an Internet of Things (IoT) based sensing service enabling the organic farmer to monitor and maintain mobile chicken coops remotely and to guarantee suitable conditions for the animals. Animal welfare under organic standards has strict regulations and requires that coops offer a suitable indoor climate and outdoor environment. Real-time monitoring through the SCS provides farmers with relevant statistics, actionable information and peace of mind through a simple mobile app.

DateGIS Demo is the follow-on demonstration project from the ARTES 20 DateGIS feasibility study completed in 2016.DateGIS is an integrated Geo-information System (GIS) for Date Palm precision agriculture. NARWHALS objective is to realise a feasibility study of a service capable to provide high accuracy positioning by monitoring and mitigating the ionospheric impact on GNSS navigation in the Arctic environment. Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) and SpacEarth Technology (SET/INGV) propose a possible solution by combining their expertise in low power hardware and managing ionospheric data.

ARCtic Sea-ice and CleAN monitoring

The project brings solution for a systematic and automatic detection of sea ice (including the identification of ice and marginal ice zone) and oil slicks in the Arctic from Sentinel-1 images. Based on Machine Learning (Support Vector Machines), it permits to process automatically thousands of images with high accuracy.

JACKSON (AMAZON CCN#1) Temp

This project is based on several ESA-backed projects, which resulted in the successful development of a set of telemedicine systems for civilian, military and commercial aviation applications. Since they were launched onto the market, the Tempus IC and Tempus Pro patient monitoring systems have been commercially successful in a range of pre-hospital care applications in Europe and North America. This new project targets the development a range of products to allow wider implementation of telemedicine and patient data sharing through easily to install technology and to access larger market segments through cardiac electro-therapy solutions.

AMTRACK : Advanced Maritime Tracking

The AMTRACK service aims at filling the gaps between terrestrial AIS service and SAT-AIS (Satellite AIS) service. Both services provide ship positions but the first is limited because of the limited VHF range of coastal stations, typically 25-30 nautical miles, while the second is limited in areas of high ship densities (Asia, Golf of Mexico, Europe…).

SBS RailS Phase 2.1

SBS RailS Phase 2.1 aims to design, build and test the first European Demonstrator of Train Control System based on the ERTMS L2 standard operating with satellite navigation and a satcom multi-bearer telecom service. GroWise

This demonstration project builds on previous work with radar carried out in the UK to develop crop growth models for a variety of arable crops. GroWise will see new models built which will give credit providers an accurate view of the crops in the ground.  It will also allow them to deliver agronomic advice, via a new app, to farmers – something which is currently lacking with small/subsistence farmers. By improving the crops of small-scale farmers it is hoped that credit providers have their loans repaid and they feel more confident in loaning greater sums, to more farmers than currently.

DART

This project has developed a cloud-based system to support more efficient management of sustainability standards in commercial fishing and processing operations. The system developed allows for the inputting of information manually into smartphones/tablets and the capture of information from sensors on-board fishing vessels (including GPS position), whilst at sea, which is sent via satellites to a central database. SatCare

SatCare aims to demonstrate two systems of remote diagnostics using a broadband managed communication system to include satcom.  The SatCare activity will allow for video rich data to transmit scans to an hospital from a vehicle on the scene of the emergency and en-route to the hospital. Enabling a robust clinical decision support system for prehospital patients has an impact on the health outcomes for patients and can improve the productivity and efficiency of the ambulance service. Through the addition of satcom we can broaden the coverage of this service to include areas where terrestrial broadband communication (LTE) is unavailable or over-subscribed. 

TIKKA Service

DeSIRE II

CyMonS

CyMonS offers spatial and high-frequency water quality monitoring of inland surface waters, combined with a 1 to 5 days forecast for cyanobacteria scums. The service integrates Sentinel-2 imagery, hand held monitors (EcoSpot & WISP-3) and fixed position monitors (EcoWatch) to monitor cyanobacteria with a high spatial scale. The algae forecasting model allows water authorities to timely issue warnings and take mitigation measures.

LymeMAP

Lyme Borreliosis (LB) is a rapidly growing health problem in the Highlands of Scotland.  This disease, carried by ticks, is difficult to prevent because there is little information available about the risk of disease, and how to reduce it.  LymeMAP integrates data from the Scottish National Lyme Borreliosis Testing Laboratory and local doctors’ surgeries with environmental data from Earth Observation satellites, to produce interactive risk maps providing information on ticks, LB and disease hot spots. For the first time in the Highlands, visitors and the local population will have access to accurate information enabling them to reduce their risk of tick bites and LB, whilst still enjoying the countryside.

The European Commission established a long-term objective of decreasing the CO2-emission levels for the building sector by 27% by 2030.Every third building in Europe is in need of deep renovation (older that sixty years). People in these houses are overpaying for the heating many times. That is both economically and environmentally harmful. Buildings account for 40% of the EU's energy consumption, 36% of its CO2 emissions. Current annual building renovation rate in Europe is below 2%.The actual thermal performance of building stock is the critical element for situation awareness, impacting progress on energy efficiency measure uptake. Utilising Earth observation, satellite navigation and ground level data, ThermCERT represents a crucial aid in helping to understand the true thermal performance of the city built environment, highlighting the energy efficiency problematic areas and issues.

During the study, the VeriSpace Consortium specified two sustainable, user-driven services that utilise these space-based technologies to meet the needs of those businesses involved in claims management.The VeriSpace feasibility study showed that space assets can contribute to providing services that can help the insurance industry in a number of business processes within the overall insurance claims process, which can ultimately provide efficiency savings to the insurance industry.

Salt Water Surface Water Monitoring

 BlueLeg Monitor (BLM) from the Netherlands investigates the use of its proprietary remote sensing technology for water quality monitoring in aquaculture. In particular Hazardous Algal Blooms create serious damage to aquaculture by incidentally suffocating fish and the release of toxins. This tendency is expected to increase as a result of global warming and nutrients run off into surface water, as well as by transport of invasive species of algae due to the release of untreated ballast water from ocean ships.

The SATMODO project is aimed specifically at the round-wood timber harvesting market, by facilitating ”live” monitoring of harvest processes. To date the SATMODO project addressed current harvesting issues in remote areas by utilizing both cellular and satellite transmission technology as a means of providing data transmission pathways for the live harvest data from the Harvester Machine.

SHM Telecom Towers

Live Land

The objective of Live Land is to provide users with a suite of services that enables the management of hazards and the exposure of national transport infrastructure assets to landslide and subsidence events. During the feasibility stage, the Live Land consortium assessed the viability of developing a suite of services driven by the needs and requirements of end user organisations. Live Land proposed a ‘catalogue’ concept, to incorporate a suite of enabling technologies (including Space-borne, in-situ and geological datasets) that could improve the forecasting, monitoring and alerting of landslides and subsidence.

Concentrating solar thermal power plants with an electricity production of up to 250 MW have to be integrated into the electricity grid. Both day-ahead and intra-day forecasting of the production and therefore direct solar irradiance forecasting is needed. The feasibility study investigates a production forecasting service using numerical weather prediction and satellite-based nowcasting. It will prepare the setup of a demonstration solar production forecast system for the Andasol-3 power plant in Spain.

SPACEGRID
