Objectives of the service

Airmine is one of the first touchpoints in the customer journey for patients with respiratory issues related to pollen and air quality. The objective of this service is to connect pharmaceutical companies directly with their potential patients at this early stage, enabling them to provide clear, targeted guidance on how to manage allergy and asthma symptoms triggered by pollen and air quality. This helps patients receive faster and more accurate support—whether through self-care, assistance at the pharmacy, or by consulting a doctor for appropriate treatment.

The service users—primarily pharmaceutical companies—need to get closer to and engage directly with patients in order to inform them about possible treatment options. These may include over-the-counter (OTC) medications, prescription drugs, diagnostic testing, or initiating more comprehensive treatments to alleviate their symptoms. Due to strict regulations around direct-to-patient marketing in the pharmaceutical industry, third-party providers like Airmine serve as valuable and complementary partners. Airmine can offer patients helpful and relevant guidance on their path toward choosing the right treatment..

Users and their needs

Service/ system concept

The services Airmine propose will address pollen allergies, asthma, and other health issues related to poor air quality. This includes developing a new model to assess asthma risk. Air quality forecasts and risk assessments can either be sourced from existing models or developed in-house by Airmine. This expanded scope aligns naturally with Airmine’s current expertise in pollen risk modeling.
Airmine has identified three potential channels, with the latter two offering the strongest commercial potential:

  • Online market assessments for use by sales departments

  • Data streams and APIs tailored for digital marketing applications

  • New, social channels that connect more directly with patients, such as online communities

Space Added Value

Airmine plans to use earth observation data to develop their new asthma and/or air quality models; soil moisture, dust (particulate matter), humidity, ground temperature and surface colours. The alternative to using satellite data would be a large number of ground sensors or expensive data sets. The satellite data gives unmatched geographical coverage and resolution.

Current Status

The kick-start project is completed. During the project, Airmine has done extensive interviews with business in the pharmaceutical sector in Europe, US and globally. This has resulted in several prototypes. In addition, Airmine has delivered early versions of the most promising services to the market to gain experience and better tailor their products to the users’ needs.
