Inaugural members of the Bioeconomy Task Force

Addressing the challenges facing the bioeconomy

The Bioeconomy Task Force launched in the Netherlands in October 2024 and is part of ESA's commitment to developing sustainable solutions to the urgent challenges facing the bioeconomy using space technologies. The Task Force comprises a wide range of leading players across this broad sector who have come together with the shared objectives of:

  • promoting the development and demonstration of sustainable innovative space-based technologies and applications which address the sustainable and circular practices in the bioeconomy and support the growth of a sustainable green economy
  • increasing the impact of the space-based applications developed through ESA programmes, thanks to the support of the sector stakeholders
  • identifying key topics based on priorities across the various sectors

Benefits

By working together, ESA's Bioeconomy Task Force will drive forward innovation and support for European businesses across the bioeconomy, from agriculture and forestry to waste and water resource management, textiles and pharmaceuticals, and the list continues to grow. The potential benefits of this collaboration include commitments to:

  • ensure sustainable socio-economic growth and help deliver tangible benefits to communities across Europe and beyond
  • support environmentally responsible developments towards just transition
  • contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals
  • support businesses across Europe to develop scalable solutions to the challenges facing the bioeconomy sector
