Objectives of the service

Construction and infrastructure companies faced a fundamental challenge: fragmented and unstructured data about their machinery and equipment. Up to 30–35% of machines remained idle at any time, while reporting for sustainability and financial compliance relied on manual and inaccurate data collection. This inefficiency led to unnecessary costs, higher emissions, and poor resource utilization.

The DARAT project addressed these issues by creating a unified data platform that collected, cleaned, and standardized real-time GNSS and telemetry data from different machine manufacturers and third-party systems. By integrating these data streams into a single, cloud-based system, DARAT enabled contractors and subcontractors to collaborate efficiently, automate reporting, and make data-driven operational decisions.

The project demonstrated and validated this technology through a pilot with leading industry partners. DARAT established a scalable data infrastructure, secure data governance, and user-friendly interfaces for cross-organisational reporting and sustainability compliance. It reduced idle machinery, improved reporting accuracy, and contributed to a more profitable and sustainable construction industry driven by real-time data across the organisations.

Users and their needs

DARAT targeted contractors and subcontractors in the construction and infrastructure sector in the Nordics. These users managed large machinery fleets across multiple projects and faced significant inefficiencies due to fragmented and multiple data sources and manual reporting.

Key user needs DARAT addressed were:

  • Need for centralized and reliable machine data across the company and projects

  • Automated and accurate sustainability and financial reporting

  • Easier and secure collaboration and data sharing between and within companies

Service/ system concept

DARAT provided a centralized data platform that gathered and structured real-time data from heavy machinery and equipment, connecting it with ERP and field data. This provided the users with up to date data and a single source of truth for their fleet. DARAT provided machine owners with core functionality for:

  • Efficient reporting, both in terms of general project reporting and sustainability reporting

  • Cross-company project collaboration and sharing of machines on projects with other companies

DARAT let machine owners dedicate their time to operational activities rather than validating information quality or performing manual data processing.

Space Added Value

DARAT used GNSS to collect real-time data on machine location and activity, combining it with other machine data and project information in one platform.

This enabled automated, precise, and verified data instead of manual or fragmented inputs. The GNSS data gathering allowed accurate reporting, efficient resource use, and regulatory compliance.

Space assets provided the data needed to enable collaboration, real actionable insight automatically, and measurable environmental and financial impact.

Current Status

The DARAT project was completed. The project resulted in an OEM agnostic heavy machinery management platform, that ingested, validated and standardised real-time GNSS and telemetry data. The platform was validated in a multi-entity pilot with the Skanska group.

Key outcomes from the pilot:

  • On the technical side, the platform was running 20+ active OEM, third-party and public integrations with over 12,600 assets under active integration, and availability stayed above the target with no downtime reported during the pilot period.

  • The pilot ran with 253 active users across five different entities.

  • Commercially the pilot resulted in commercial contracts, with multiple of the largest contractors in the Nordics.

The standardised telemetry was integrated directly into the Company's existing platform across asset management, maintenance, order, rental and project modules, and supported automated project, portfolio and CSRD sustainability reporting.
