Objectives of the service

E-Spacement addresses the urgent challenge of deploying EV charging infrastructure in the right locations, where actual user demand, grid feasibility, and regulatory constraints intersect. The service uses a combination of satellite data, open infrastructure data, and predictive AI to score and prioritise optimal sites. Users can access an intuitive dashboard that shows 'charger affinity' per site, helping them identify where investments will be most effective.

Users and their needs

E-Spacement serves a variety of public and private stakeholders planning EV infrastructure:

  • Charge Point Operators (CPOs) – need to maximise charger utilisation and ROI

  • Municipalities and transport planners – want equitable and AFIR-compliant rollouts

  • Consultants and mobility analysts – need harmonised, visual data to guide clients

The initial rollout focuses on Hungary but the tool is designed from the inception to be able to serve all of Europe.

Service/ system concept

The E-Spacement system delivers ranked site recommendations with rich contextual data, including:

  • Site scoring based on 100+ criteria (traffic, sociodemographics, POIs, EO data, elevation, etc.)

  • Customisable weighting by user type or regulation

  • API or dashboard access to results

Architecture: EO and GNSS data are processed in the cloud, fused with local datasets and demographic inputs, and analysed by a modular ML pipeline. Outputs are served via web map interface and PDF reports.

Space Added Value

E-Spacement leverages Copernicus Earth Observation data (land use, elevation, impervious surface mapping) and GNSS-based road network insights to identify optimal sites that are not visible through traditional planning tools. This spatial intelligence adds measurable value in:

  • Uncovering underused areas with high potential

  • Capturing environmental constraints

  • Supporting large-scale, cross-border harmonisation

By combining EO and ground truth data, E-Spacement surpasses what existing GIS platforms or local consultants alone can offer.

Current Status

The project is in pilot phase. A scoring engine prototype has been deployed using Hungarian datasets and tested with a major national CPO. Integration of EO and demographic data for Germany and the Netherlands has begun. A UI/UX dashboard prototype has been shared with stakeholders, and feedback is being incorporated.
