Objectives of the service

Origin is expanding its trenchless pipeline repair and satellite leak detection technologies across the UK and globally. These solutions have proven to boost efficiency, cut costs, and reduce environmental impact, driving strong demand from Water Companies. 

Currently, field data is collected manually, leaving it vulnerable to human error and poor 4G/5G coverage, which undermines reporting accuracy and leak detection modelling. 

To overcome this, Origin is developing Origin Aura — an autonomous system combining Satcom, GNSS, and advanced sensors for precise, real-time data capture anywhere. By licensing Aura to Water Companies, Origin enables them to operate independently, eliminating on-site support and accelerating global rollout. 

Origin Aura will deliver instant, reliable insights for R&D, performance tracking, and reporting — giving Water Companies confidence in verified water savings and advancing global water conservation efforts.

Users and their needs

Target users: Water Companies in the UK and abroad — from field technicians to leakage managers and senior executives. 

User needs: A safe, robust sensor system that accurately identifies leak and repair locations, verifies outcomes, and supports cost, environmental, and operational goals.

Service/ system concept

The system will integrate acoustic, pressure, mass flow, environmental, and GNSS sensors to deliver precise, verifiable leak and repair data, with acoustic validation providing clear proof of outcomes. Using Satcom technology, Origin Aura will transmit data in real time from any location, ensuring reliable connectivity even in remote areas. This enables immediate reporting for clients and analysts while allowing Origin to maintain full oversight of tool usage, ensuring proper operation, contractual compliance, and consistent, technician-level quality across all deployments. 

Space Added Value

Origin Aura harnesses two key space technologies — Satcom and GNSS — to deliver global, low-latency connectivity and precise location data independent of terrestrial networks or regional telecom constraints. Using Iridium’s constellation ensures reliable, low-power operation anywhere in the world. 

This integration enables real-time oversight, remote monitoring, and automated data capture that cellular systems cannot match, particularly in rural or infrastructure-poor regions. By avoiding coverage gaps and regulatory barriers, Aura ensures autonomous, accurate, and immediate data transmission for cleaner performance insights. 

Together, these space assets enhance operational reliability, drive continuous product improvement, and enable global licensing and monitoring — giving Origin a distinct competitive edge through verifiable environmental and efficiency outcomes. 

Current Status

Significant progress has been made on Origin Aura’s development. Workshops with four UK Water Companies have shaped a design rooted in real operational needs, while internal collaboration has produced a balanced outline integrating client, operational, and strategic priorities. 

Satcom suppliers have been shortlisted for testing to confirm performance across environments, and the system architecture has been refined to ensure secure, real-time data flow into the Origin datastore — enabling accurate reporting, client confidence, and ongoing product innovation.
