Objectives of the service

Healthcare organizations lose millions annually through misplaced medical equipment and compromised pharmaceutical shipments. Hospitals report 1–2% annual asset loss rates, while temperature‑sensitive medications worth €10,000–50,000 risk spoilage during transport without continuous monitoring. STASH+ addressed these challenges by developing a hybrid tracking solution that seamlessly transitions between indoor and outdoor environments. The system combined Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for precise indoor positioning with cellular LTE‑M and satellite connectivity for outdoor tracking, powered by sustainable paper battery technology.

Users and their needs

Primary User Communities:

Hospital Networks (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, France, Nordics)

  • Track high‑value medical equipment (€5,000+) during inter‑facility transfers

  • Monitor rental equipment usage and location to verify billing accuracy

  • Reduce 1–2% annual asset loss rate and eliminate emergency rental costs

  • Key stakeholders: Belgian Hospitals

Pharmaceutical & Medical Device Companies (European operations)

  • Ensure cold‑chain compliance for temperature‑sensitive shipments worth €10,000–50,000

  • Meet regulatory requirements with continuous temperature and location logging

  • Track specialized surgical equipment and medical device distribution

  • Key stakeholders: Pfizer, Arthrex/Zimmer‑Biomed via Freight Verify

Defense & Government Logistics (Netherlands, Belgium)

  • Monitor supplies, equipment, and sensitive materials during naval vessel loading

  • Maintain operational readiness with comprehensive depot‑to‑deployment tracking

  • Key stakeholder: Dutch Marine via partner Voclarion

Critical User Needs:

  • Seamless indoor‑outdoor tracking without manual intervention

  • Extended battery life (6+ months) to minimize operational disruption

  • Temperature monitoring with regulatory‑compliant reporting

  • Real‑time alerts for location deviations and environmental excursions

  • Integration with existing logistics and asset management systems

  • Affordable total cost of ownership (<€100/year per asset)

Service/ system concept

STASH+ combines ultra‑thin tracking hardware with a secure cloud platform (stash.blyott.app). One low‑profile tag supports:

  • Indoor positioning via BLE using existing hospital infrastructure (<5 m accuracy).

  • Outdoor tracking via GNSS with LTE‑M backhaul; optional satellite (NTN) extends coverage in remote or maritime areas.

  • Environmental sensing (temperature, humidity, light) for cold‑chain compliance.

Enfucell’s flexible paper battery enables up to nine months of operation in a <5 mm form factor, aligning with healthcare ESG goals.   The Blyott Cloud ingests device data to deliver:

  • Real‑time location with historical playback

  • Configurable geofence and temperature alerts

  • ROI dashboards on utilization and loss prevention

  • APIs for integration with hospital/logistics systems

  • Mobile apps for field staff

The architecture minimizes new hardware, leverages existing networks, and scales from single sites to cross‑border supply chains.

Space Added Value

Space assets used: GNSS (GPS/Galileo) for precise outdoor positioning today; satellite communications (3GPP NTN, planned) to extend coverage where cellular is weak or unavailable.

Added value versus terrestrial‑only approaches:

  • Continuous end‑to‑end tracking across hospitals, supply routes and borders, reducing blind spots in rural, maritime and underground segments.

  • Trusted, auditable position history that meets regulatory expectations for pharmaceutical cold‑chain and high‑value medical assets.

  • Faster exception handling: accurate geofenced alerts and temperature excursions are tied to reliable location context, improving response times.

  • Lower deployment effort: no outdoor gateways; leverage global GNSS and satellite networks that scale with minimal site work.

Current Status

Completed a six‑month kick start activity and prototype:

Three hospital networks committed to pilots; two pharma/med‑device pilots confirmed.

  • Built ultra‑thin tag (<5 mm) combining BLE, GNSS and LTE‑M, with temperature sensing and up to nine‑month paper‑battery life.

  • Integrated with the Blyott Cloud; dashboards, alerts and APIs operational at stash.blyott.app.

  • Validated indoors (<5 m) and outdoors (<10 m) accuracy across test sites.
