Objectives of the service

The project aims to revolutionize the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) process for nature-based solutions by developing a scalable, AI-powered SaaS platform. This platform will utilize satellite imagery to provide accurate tree species identification, forest carbon sequestration, and biodiversity indicators. By addressing the high costs and inefficiencies of conventional MRV methods, the service will support project developers, investors, and consultants in assessing opportunities efficiently and producing reliable MRV reports, thus enhancing transparency and trust in the voluntary carbon market and ensuring compliance with upcoming regulations such as the EUDR and CSRD.

Users and their needs

Targeted users include:

  • Nature-based project developers (e.g., sustainable forestry managers, corporate-owned projects): Need accurate and cost-effective MRV data to certify carbon offsets and improve project management practices.

  • Consultancies: Require scalable and timely data to support project development and management.

  • Organizations subject to CSRD reporting obligations: Require robust and auditable data to justify their environmental impact and meet regulatory requirements.

  • Large commodity traders subject to EUDR: Need proof that their commodities do not contribute to deforestation for compliance with regulations.

Countries targeted: Primarily EU countries but also globally for VCM participants.

Service/ system concept

Kanop’s AI-powered SaaS platform provides an automated, satellite-based solution for forest carbon and biodiversity measurement. The platform applies proprietary machine learning models on multispectral, SAR, and LiDAR satellite data to deliver precise indicators such as forest cover, canopy height, above and belowground biomass, and species distribution. Users can access this data through a self-service web app or API, enabling them to generate digital maps and detailed reports efficiently. This reduces the need for costly field visits and enhances the accuracy and transparency of MRV processes.

Space Added Value

The platform leverages various space assets, including optical multispectral (Sentinel-2, Landsat 8), radar imagery (Sentinel-1, ALOS PALSAR), and LiDAR data (GEDI). These assets provide comprehensive and high-resolution data that improve the accuracy of forest carbon stock and species identification. The integration of multi-temporal satellite data allows for robust monitoring of forest dynamics, offering a significant advantage over traditional, labour-intensive field methods. This space-based approach ensures scalability, cost-efficiency, and reliability, enabling broad application across diverse ecosystems and regulatory frameworks.

Current Status

The project is in the starting phase. Interviews are being conducted with selected users to gather requirements.
