Objectives of the service

Luna proposes carrying out a feasibility study, to assess the commercial and operational benefit in providing enhanced mapping services by adding GNSS referenced EO data from the Copernicus Mission and other third-party Earth Observation data sources with crowd sourced vision data, generated by Luna-equipped micro mobility vehicles. Where Digital Elevation Maps (DEMs) and live EO data can be merged with real-time image capture from thousands of shared e-scooters, e-bikes, e-mopeds etc across Europe (and globally), the opportunity exists to develop up-to-date mapping and terrestrial imaging solutions, that can be used in multiple verticals to initiate event driven actions.

Users and their needs

The users are those who manage and monitor roadways and paths within urban environments for the purposes of providing transport, logistics and near real time city management.

Service/ system concept

Luna are equipping shared micro mobility vehicles and developing new computer vision algorithms designed to infill the temporal and resolution gaps in the ESA data sets, with near real time street level, crowdsourced vision data from scooters and bikes. This data will be made available via APIs.

Space Added Value

Geospatial data describes objects, events and other features at locations on or near the surface of the earth. Continually updating data from sensors, satellites and other data collection methods, can accumulate historical, real-time and near real-time information, which can provide continually updating information to human in the loop and autonomous technologies relying on geospatial data. The availability of “self-stitching” geospatial data improves data utility and accuracy, while enabling data analysts to spot trends that might not otherwise be seen.

Current Status

The project plan follows as standard ESA feasibility study format
It kicked-off in June 2023 (T0) with the Progress meeting on October 3rd 2023. The Business case Review took place on the 7th of February 2024 ans the final review on May 17th 2024.
