ARTES Apps Final Presentations Day

The ARTES Applications Final Presentation Day, held on 18 June at ESTEC, provided a useful opportunity to find out more about recently completed ARTES Applications feasibility studies and projects.

In the iVoice project (Feasibility Study), a consortium led by the Centre for Space Medicine at the University College London is developing a system for remotely detecting driver fatigue, something of particular interest to the mining industry.

For SATFORM 3D, the main objective is to develop an online cloud-based service for the logging industry that allows integration and analysis of Earth Observation (EO) and forest inventory data by using a simple user interface.

Surmon is an IAP project dedicated to developing viable commercial services using Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems for, among others, the oil and gas industry.

The goal of Sarontar is to deploy space-based assets for emergency response teams in Alpine rescue missions.

SAT AIS DPC is building on the growing interest in satellite-based AIS monitoring for the shipping industry. Co-funded by European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and ESA, the DPC system collects SAT-AIS messages and ancillary information for generating and distributing enhanced data services to the maritime community.

Finally, Intogener is aimed at the development and demonstration of water-flow forecasting system based on the assimilation of near real-time measurements of hydrological data.

SMALL ARTES Apps Open Call

The purpose of the Small ARTES Apps Open Call is to stimulate the submission of realistic ideas for innovative utilisation of space services and technologies such as Satellite Communications, Satellite Navigation, Earth Observation, Human Spaceflight technologies within non-space markets, such as transport, energy, health, agriculture, environment, safety, etc..

Applications addressing relevant problems, needs or opportunities in Portuguese speaking African countries are encouraged.

The Call is open to the Portuguese space and non-space industry and academia and newcomers to space applications or downstreaming.

The available grant per Application is up to 25.000 Euro in a co-funding basis up to 50% of the total project cost. All Application must be submitted to IPN in .pdf format to space@ipn.pt

The Call is open to the Portuguese space and non-space industry and academia and newcomers to space applications or downstreaming.

Sway4edu connects rural schools

At an event organised on 17 June 2015 at the Comprehensive School of Tricarico-Calciano (Italy), the ARTES-supported Sway4edu project celebrated bringing a number rural schools in Italy and Africa online by means of satellite communications. In the course of the event, two satellite connections were established; the first with the students and the principal of the Primary School of Babati (South Africa), with which Tricarico is now twinned, the second with Francesco Feliciani, head of commercial projects for TIA's IAP Programme. 

Sway4edu is a project to deploy satellite technology in rural areas that are not served by conventional broadband Internet. In addition to support from ESA through the ARTES Programme, the project has also been funded by Openet and the regional government of Basilicata.

"This experience is a model of innovation," said Raffaele Liberali, Minister of Education for the Basilicata region. "It represents an example of what the Italian Ministry of Education aims to realize at national level in the near future. Tricarico today is at the vanguard of this pilot project."

"ESA is delighted to promote the creation of cultural bridges such as the one between the schools in Basilicata and South Africa," said ESA's Francesco Felicani. "This is an exciting challenge to support."
