Maritime Communication Seminar

On 15th February 2017, a Maritime Communication Seminar was held in Trondheim. It was a cooperative initiative between AP Norway, NFAS (Norwegian Forum for Autonomous Ships) and Geminisenter Maritime Communication.

A good communication solution for use at sea is a critical component of an autonomous ship system and many new and existing projects are looking into this problem. To give interested parties an overview of the situation regarding maritime communication and new autonomous ship projects, the Norwegian Forum for Autonomous Ships (NFAS), the Gemini Centre for Maritime Communication at NTNU and SINTEF as well as the European Space Agency's Integrated Applications Programme (IAP) sponsored a seminar on maritime communication and autonomous ships in Trondheim. The seminar was held at the premises of NTNU and SINTEF at Tyholt in Trondheim and had about 70 participants.

The seminar agenda included presentations on the IAP programme and the role of APNorway, the test arena for autonomous vessels in Trondheimsfjorden, global communication services (Global Express and GMDSS). Norwegian regulatory interest in CEPT (Committee of European Postal & Telephone) and ITU, communication possibilities in the High North, LEO satellite systems for AIS and VDES, communication security (QoS), cyber security, autonomous systems and remote operation and control.
