SBS RailS Phase 2.1

Status date: 19 December 2018

SBS RailS Phase 2.1 aims to design, build and test the first European Demonstrator of Train Control System based on the ERTMS L2 standard operating with satellite navigation and a satcom multi-bearer telecom service. The demonstrator will be tested on the Pinerolo-Sangone pilot line in collaboration with RFI that in the meantime has activated the certification process with the safety agencies.

SBS-RailS

Space Based Services for Railway Signalling feasibility study shall assess technical feasibility and economic viability of an integrated satellite navigation and satellite communication solution complementing Level 2 European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

Satellite navigation systems can be integrated with the on-board and wayside signalling systems to guarantee the required level of safety (SIL4) that is today provided by the existing train detection systems, while satellite communication systems can complement or even replace terrestrial communications.

Urban Space Series

The Urban Space Series is a real-time index of urban economic development. The product developed in common with ESA and QuantCube Technology is an IA platform for land characterization, specifically to detect urban city area, based on satellite images. The service monthly provides the shape of selected cities and useful metrics such as area and urban change detection.

LUMEN

Status date: 28 August 2018

LUMEN provides a fully integrated end-to-end solution for real time monitoring and critical situation management with medium sized RPAS that can operate beyond line of sight.

The service is demonstrated with two specific use cases representative for the target market: flood extend mapping and maritime coastal monitoring.

TransparentForests

TransparentForests, a web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping and data management, is designed to increase the credibility and transparency of the FSC certification process. It supports all stakeholders in engaging with, and improving the certification process. It creates opportunities for operational efficiency across the certification service delivery chain. The TransparentForests concept has applications in forest insurance, finance and biomass energy.  

TransparentForests (FS)

Forest products such as paper, wood and composite materials are used in everything from construction to news distribution and energy generation, yet they may represent considerable environmental and social impacts. Today, knowing the origin and life cycle of product constituents is important for both retailers and consumers. Major corporations do not like to be associated with poor forest management: it is bad for business and for customer relations.

Space Applications using Animal tracking data

The aim of the feasibility study is to evaluate a service for monitoring wildlife and farm animals. The service consists of a hardware part (collars for the animals, buy or lease) and a software to be offered as software as a service. For users these two parts are transparent, and they rent an overall service for animal tracking.

DeSIRE II

Status date: 27 June 2017

DeSIRE II, Second Element of the ESA EDA RPAS Demonstration Roadmap, aims at developing and demonstrating a service based on a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) flying in Beyond Radio Line of Sight (BRLOS) using a dual satcom link supporting Command and Control  (C2) and Air Traffic Control (ATC) functions.

The project also aims at demonstrating to the users the potential of RPAS complemented by satellite applications (Satcom, Satnav and Earth Observation) for developing new services for operations.

Project objectives are pursued by means of a real flight campaign using Piaggio Aerospace P.1HH RPAS, and complemented by simulation and emulation activities.

MAPCAM

MAPCAM provides crop identification and crop productivity information through the growing season to support a number of different regulatory, policy, planning and protection functions aimed at ensuring food security and adaptation to above-average climate change impacts.

DAMMINGS

The project designed, developed and carried out pre-operations of a service platform providing an automated and continuous monitoring service of dam infrastructure and its surroundings by integrating GNSS and InSAR space capabilities.

DAEDALUS

The DAEDALUS service offered by Satavia aims to assist airlines, air navigation service providers, and aircraft and aeroengine manufacturers to increase operational safety and efficiency, and increase situational awareness of stakeholders on aircraft and the ground. Key objectives include in-flight detection and forecasting of a range of aviation hazards, and analytics to support flight operations.

AquaFarm

IDiSPUTE supports land use planning and identification of hazards for the population through the application of an innovative algorithm based on artificial intelligence applied to images from earth observation satellites.

IceCast

Status date: 06 November 2018

IceCast demo project aims to develop and demonstrate a service based on IoT based capabilities combined with space assets, to help navigation planning in ice covered water areas. The solution fetches data from different data sources, stores the data, analyses it and provides output via graphical UI. There are three pilot customers who are piloting the solution in Baltic Sea and are giving input for solution development during the creation phase.

 

SafeSki

The SafeSki Demonstration Project covers the pilot implementation of Safety and Information Services for Ski Resorts and succeeds the successfully completed SafeSki Feasibility Study. The SafeSki pilot-demonstration stage aims at increasing the safety and security on slopes, increasing customers and thus revenue, saving time regarding data acquisition and documentation and reducing personnel costs through optimization of internal processes.

Earthcube

Every year, millions of financial contracts whose value is indexed on hard commodities prices are traded on financial markets. Australia and Brazil represent 54% of the global supply, while China and India combined represent more than half of the global demand in hard commodities. It is thus key for investors to be able to forecast outputs and inputs in these countries where opacity remains high. Earthcube leverages satellites to tackle this issue.

TALED

TALED is an innovative integrated SATCOM/EO/GNSS platform to cope in RT/NRT with all kind of Fire incidents in outdoors: Forest fires, Waste fires and Hazmat Fires. The system will guarantee better technical and economical performances of the service. TALED has been integrated in the DSS of Campania Region, operated by SMA, the official service provider and TALED’s team partner.

TTSat

The successive and recurring epidemiological crisis in developing countries have evidenced the need for more efficient organisation in terms of diseases early detection and warning as well as global emergency response capacity.

There is a clear opportunity to provide an integrated information system delivering real time data collection and alert from/to all sites in a territory where no telecommunication infrastructure is available in remote sites.

Built upon the epiSat business solution by Telemedicine Technologies S.A.S. and leveraging satellite terminals by CLS (Collecte Localisation Satellites), the TTSat service will be deployed in collaboration with UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) in three countries, Benin, Guinea and Senegal.

CountFloors

Status date: 22 October 2018

CountFloors (CF) is a service designed to collect and analyse GNSS-geocoded images of buildings acquired at street level together with Sentinel data. CF automatically retrieves ground-level and satellite images on urban areas of interest, and uses a machine learning approach to extract risk-relevant characteristics of buildings depicted in the images. These features are sought after by risk modellers and insurance companies; yet they are of interest also in the real estate market and to the municipalities for their planning.

SYMPA

Sympa: “All-around solution for the sustainable monitoring and control of Marine protected Areas”.

Vitrociset Belgium, le Centre Spatial de Liège, and LaMMA joined in Consortium, developed a system for the supervision of the touristic and commercial traffic for the benefit of the Marine Protected Area and maritime authorities, by mean of providing added value location based services to tourists and integrating this information with AIS data.

Sympa service offering is completed by the “Vessel Detection” facility that exploits the Sentinel images for target detection; and the “Water quality” monitoring which integrates earth observation into innovative biogeochemical and hydrodynamic models as support the for a sustainable and competitive tourism.

IoTrees

Forests cover 30% of the Earths land area and provide a vital role by converting atmospheric carbon into oxygen as part of the growth process. Forests are essentially the ‘Lungs of the Earth’. Determining the rate of forest growth is an essential indicator of the health of a forest and also a key indicator to estimate future growth performance. Climate Change is a major concern to humanity and many countries around the globe have established national forest inventories to determine forest growth and health. Treemetrics through the Internet of Trees (IoTrees) project has developed a vision and plan to revolutionise the way trees and forests are measured and monitored by utilising latest Satcom and IoT technologies.

Curio Canopy

Combining analysis of satellite imagery with crowdsourced data, this urban tree montioring platform connects communities and urban forestry professionals. It provides an open data service that drives improved understanding of urban trees and access to better information in order to: i) increase tree planting and tree care; ii) improve environmental conservation management and planning; iii) support educational and communication resources for learning and knowledge-sharing.

SAGAS

The SAGAS feasibility study successfully completed the investigation of the viability of Multi-Source ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast) integrated services, bringing the terrestrial ADS-B (ADS-B-TER) and space based ADS-B (ADS-B-SAT) technologies with added-value from  relevant ground and space based data-fusion and advance analytics for delivering the “best of truth” aircraft and airspace surveillance capabilities and value-added applications for the target markets and use scenarios.

SAMoH

Satellite Earth Observation offers a rich source of information-rich temporal data for those charged with monitoring and managing natural habitats. The SAMoH platform helps to connect these users with imagery and provides analytical and visualization tools that do not require users to be remote sensing experts. Through the use of cloud storage, cloud processing power and open data cube technology, turning imagery into insight for a range of users in the environmental sector is quick, easy and cost-effective.

COHABIT

COHABIT monitors and assesses in real-time the whereabouts of large wild animals and dynamically generates geo-fenced alerts for visitors to avoid dangerous encounters and for farmers to protects their crops and livestock. Wildlife – human cohabitation is made possible through the use of data analytics, image-recognition, animal tracking and space technology.

Blue SIROS

The project investigates the technical feasibility and commercial viability of an operational system for marine route optimisation, which integrates modelling/forecasts of ocean currents based on near-real time satellite altimetry data services. The service supports commercial users in the maritime community with respect to fuel savings, competiveness and port logistics as well as ship safety.

SolumScire

Status date: 14 December 2017

SolumScire makes use of latest satellite- and positioning technologies to better understand soil and soil conditions in crop production. The project collects and combines high resolution satellite and soil analysis data to provide soil spatial information and to create a service for farmers to feed spatial soil information automatically into their farm management system (FMS) to then improve field related precision farming activities.

LUMEN

LUMEN (Light UAS in non-segregated airspace for Maritime and Environmental surveillance) is a demonstration project aiming at promoting the operational use of a light RPAS (Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems) for Maritime surveillance and Environmental (Flood) monitoring delivering real-time information to the end-users.  For this, the LUMEN system combines different space technologies: GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Signals) for navigation of the RPAS and geo-correction of the acquired data and real-time satellite communication to transfer the acquired data from the Ground Control Station to the service provider.
